New heads for the reds

I finally got around to replacing the heads on my 5 piece drum set. Actually, I am replacing the heads on the 3 toms only. The snare I did a while ago, and the bass drum seems fine like it is. I think the coated heads look a lot cleaner then the clear ones (at least until they get dirty!)

The snare drum renewal project (part 2)

So now it's time to replace the snares. It's pretty straightforward, just unscrew the old ones and put the new ones back in the same way. Two things to remember: 1) release the tension from the clutch before you begin and throw off the snares. 2) align the non moving end with where the old one was (almost to the edge and not centered) because it will move towards the clutch when you throw the snares back on.
Now it's finished and sitting with the floor tom I changed the head on earlier today before I put them back away. My small set is almost done. I still have to do the bass drum, but that will be another day!
And I have to do four drums of my large set. I already have the stuff. It's just a matter of when it becomes the "project of the day!"

The snare drum renewal project! (Part 1)

I decided it was time to complete my long delayed snare drum renewal/upgrade project. I had planned for a while to replace the worn out head with a new Fiberskyn head and wider snares. The Fiberskyn heads are the syntheric replacement for the old calf skin heads that were common decades ago and popular because of their warm sound (note: no cows were harmed: SYNTHETIC!) and the wider snares (wires) give a fuller sound.

So I removed the old head, but before I put on the new head I cleaned the wooden shell and the metal rim. I put on the new head and tightened it finger tight (to get even tension) before I used the drum key to tune it up.
